Fat-tailed gerbils feed primarily on insects and plant material in the wild. At the Zoo the fat-tailed gerbils receive a commercial animal biscuit as the base diet. The enrichment portion of the diet includes a variety of seeds, insects and a small amount of fruit and vegetables.
Fat-tailed gerbils are found in the northern portion of desert west of the Nile Delta in Egypt. Their range also extends into Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria.
