Duties

This position plays an integral role in assisting with the coordination and implementation of events at the Philadelphia Zoo. We are looking for a hard-working intern that desires hands-on experience in event planning. The applicant must be dependable, detail-oriented and high-energy. The desired background experience includes at least a junior level college education, involvement in any of the following areas: event planning, public relations, customer/guest service or marketing.

This is a great opportunity to experience working in a nonprofit environment while enhancing event planning skills.

Under the supervision of the Events Manager, the intern will be responsible for assisting in various phases of event production and administration. The internship program is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn about all phases of event production including but not limited to:

  • Respond to phone and email inquiries
  • Draft proposals, contracts, invoices and event plans
  • Day to day logistical planning
  • Communicating with clientele, caterer, vendors and zoo staff
  • Creating additional opportunities to generate revenue from events
  • Event setup and execution
  • Event evaluation and follow up

 
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to work independently, quickly and under pressure (essential).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (essential).
  • Interest in the coordination, planning, and support of events, daily operational and administrative functions.
  • Detail oriented thinking.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Familiarity and enthusiasm for event management and promotions (desired).
  • Junior level college education.
  • Past or current involvement in any of the following areas: event planning, public relations. customer/guest service or marketing

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Ability to balance multiple responsibilities (essential).
  • Excellent written communication skills (essential).
  • Be able to work a flexible schedule and attend events outside of normal work week.
  • No allergies related to plants or animals which would interfere with your ability to work.
  • Multi-task oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Good computer skills; familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Online Services.
  • Work 8-16 hours a week.
  • Capable of lifting up to 25 lbs

Availability

Minimum of 10 weeks of service, with sessions beginning in August, October, January and May.
Time: 8-16 hours per week (up to 12 “office hours” Monday through Friday; up to 4 “practical hours”)
 
*Suitable candidates will be considered for entire 8-month duration.
